Whether your home is on a sewer or septic system, the systems within your home are essentially the same. As supply systems depend on pressure, drainage systems don’t. Your house’s waste material is ejected because drainage pipes are angled downward. The waste is pulled along by gravity. This downward flow continues to the sewage treatment facility or a tank.
Although the system may seem simple, there are many components to it. These include vents, traps, and cleanouts. Vents on the roof allow air to pass through the drainpipes. Without air, the wastewater wouldn’t flow properly and would have to be diverted from the traps.

The drainage system is incomplete without traps. A trap can be found under every sink. The section of pipe that curves or S-shapes under a drain. The basin is filled with water that flows through it. However, enough force allows the water to pass through the trap to the drainpipe. Afterward, enough water remains in the trap to seal the trap.

This prevents sewer gas back up into your home. Each fixture should have a trap. Toilets are self-trapped and don’t require an additional trap at the drain. Drum traps are often found in bathtubs. They not only seal against sewer gas but also collect hair and dirt to prevent blocked drains. Grease traps are used to collect grease from kitchen sinks to prevent clogging. Grease and hair are the main causes of drain clogs. Traps often have cleanout plugs to make it easier to clear any blockages.
A drainage system comprises all these components and is often called the DWV or the drain-waste-vent system.

All components of the DWV need to be in good order and present for water to flow freely. Examine the pipes in the basement or crawl space under your house to help you understand the system better.

Drainage and Supply

There is no overlap between the supply and drainage subsystems. However, some bridges connect the two. These bridges are what make a plumbing system worthwhile. A fixture is any connection between the supply and drain systems.

Fixtures include toilets, sinks, tubs, and bathtubs. A fixture can also include an outside faucet and a washing machine. All devices that draw water and drain wastewater are fixtures. They are all designed to maintain a strict separation between the supply and drain systems.

You don’t have to shut off the main shutoff valve to repair some fixtures. It is a good idea for everyone to know where the main shutoff valve is located in your home and how to use it. It might be a good idea to label the main shutoff valve to make it easy for anyone to find.

Before you change or add any pipes to your home, make sure to consult your local plumbing code official. It will tell you what is permissible and prohibited and whether the homeowner can do their work. You can save a lot of money if you get the go-ahead.
