The stories based on real life can sometimes be turned into the most compelling and convincing films and over the years we have been treated to a whole bunch of films that have brought the lives of real people to the big screen. This famous film genre will continue in 2013 too. Here are our Top 10 much awaited upcoming films based on real life events.
1. Zero Dark Thirty (2013)
Columbia Pictures “Zero Dark Thirty” is one of the most anticipated American action thriller film based on the story of history’s greatest manhunt for the world’s most dangerous man and the film chronicles American efforts to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. The film is directed and co-produced by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Mark Boal, both worked together in “The Hurt Locker”, it won six Oscars, including Best Director for Bigelow, the first woman to win this award. It also won Best Picture. Boal won for Best Original Screenplay.
Kathryn Bigelow’s ex-husband ‘James Cameron’ was previously in negotiations to direct the film, but dropped out due to pre-production work of the sequel of Avatar. “Zero Dark Thirty” is the frontrunner at the upcoming Academy Awards. Watch Trailer
2. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Paramount Pictures’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, along with other cast members including Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner, Kyle Chandler, and Matthew McConaughey, among others. It is a crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Terence Winter. The film is based on the memoir of the same name by Jordan Belfort. “The Wolf of Wall Street” will make a fifth collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio.
The first Martin Scorsese film to be shot with anamorphic lenses since his “Bringing Out the Dead (1999). The story about a New York stockbroker, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who unwilling to cooperate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, the corporate banking world and mob infiltration. 3. Pain & Gain (2013)
Based on a true story, Paramount Pictures’s “Pain & Gain” follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida. The film is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and directed by Michael Bay. The film has some big names like Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub, Rebel Wilson and Ken Jeong. This is Michael Bay’s lowest budgeted film since his feature film debut, the 1995 action-comedy “Bad Boys”. Watch Trailer
4. Snitch (2013)
Summit Entertainment’s “Snitch” is an upcoming fast-paced action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Michael Kenneth Williams, Barry Pepper and, written and directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Dwayne Johnson stars as a father whose teenage son is wrongly accused of a drug trafficking crime and is looking at a compulsory minimum prison sentence of 10 years. Desperate and determined to rescue his son at all costs, he makes a deal with the U.S. attorney to work as an undercover informant and infiltrate a drug cartel on a dangerous mission – risking everything, including his family and his own life. 5. Twelve Years a Slave (2013)
New Regency Productions’s “Twelve Years a Slave” is an upcoming drama film directed and written by Steve McQueen and co-written by John Ridley. It is based on the memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Paul Dano. The story follows a man living in New York during the mid-1800s is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the deep south. This film marks the reuniting of Dwight Henry and Quvenzhané Wallis, both from Louisiana, who were acclaimed for their first-ever acting roles when they co-starred in “Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)”. 6. Captain Phillips (2013)
Paul Greengrass’s “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks as real life ship captain Richard Phillips who allowed himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates in exchange for the safety of his crew. It is based on the Phillips’s memoir “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy Seals, and Dangerous Days at Sea” – recounts his three days as their captive and his dramatic rescue. “Captain Phillips” look like steady genre fare along the lines of Paul Greengrass’s “Green Zone (2010), which was also based on real events. 7. Miracle Underground (2013)
Worldwide Evolution Films’s “Miracle Underground” is an upcoming drama film about the most captivating story of recent history, the 33 Chilean miners that were first left for dead to later be rescued alive after 70 days under almost 700 meters below the surface. It is directed by Armand Mastroianni and written by Dino Di Durante. It stars Eric Roberts, Nia Peeples and Adrian Paul. Trailer Coming Soon
8. uwantme2killhim? (2013)
Joanne Froggatt, Toby Regbo, Stephanie Leonidas, Liz White and Jaime Winstone are all set to star in the Andrew Douglas-directed thriller “uwantme2killhim” for Momentum Pictures and Alliance Films. The film is based on “Judy Bachrach’s Vanity Fair” article and follows a 16 year old boy named Mark who meets Rachel on the Internet and begins an intense online relationship. When Rachel is murdered, the boy and Rachel’s brother make plans to avenge her death. Mike Walden adapted the script while Bryan Singer, Steve Golin, Peter Heslop and Simon Crocker will produce. 9. Frank and Cindy (2013)
“Frank and Cindy” based on the 2007 documentary of the same name about Frank Garcia — bassist for the early 1980s one-hit wonder Oxo, and his older wife, Cindy Brown. The film is directed by G.J. Echternkamp, who made the award-winning documentary. Rene Russo, who stars as Thor’s immortal mother in this summer’s comic-book tentpole, will play the real-life groupie who married the young rock star of her dreams and then watched him burn-out in the indie. 10. Belle (2013)
“Belle” is Amma Asante’s upcoming period drama, about the trials and tribulations of a mixed-race girl, in the 1700s, stars: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Miranda Richardson, Tom Wilkinson, Sarah Gadon, Sam Claflin, and Matthew Goode. Mbatha-Raw is of course playing the lead role, Belle. Trailer Coming Soon
